When planning your perfect outdoor space, railing and stairs, and general accessories shouldn’t be an afterthought. Simple things such as effective, inviting lighting and hidden deck fasteners can have a positive impact. Here’s what you need to know regarding pricing for railing, steps and other deck accessories.

What Are the Accessories You Might Need for a Deck?

A deck can be a serious investment, and you should remember to include the cost of railing and other accessories such as steps, lighting and hidden deck fasteners. Here’s a list of the things you might need to plan for when finishing up your deck:

Railing: Railing can be aesthetically pleasing, but the main function is safety. They are mandatory in Canada when the deck is 60 cm or more above the ground. The railing’s height must comply with standards. Between 60 cm and 1.8 m above the ground, the railing must be 91 cm high. If the deck is higher, the railing must measure 1.07 m. These are Canadian guidelines, so it’s important to verify with your province or city, as local regulations may be stricter.

Steps: Steps are a matter of safety and accessibility. Placing a few stones to access your deck won’t pass the test! Stairs are regulated in terms of size and spacing. If you need more than three steps to access your deck, those steps must be equipped with a railing for safety reasons.

Lighting: Lighting can create ambiance but is essential for safety reasons. Accidents can happen quickly at night when you can’t see well. Outdoor lighting must be particularly durable, especially if it is permanent lighting. Whether they need to be plugged in or are solar-powered, always make use to choose lights designed for outdoor use. At the national level, there are no rules regulating deck lighting. However, there may be provincial or municipal bylaws.

Hidden deck fasteners: They might not seem as glamorous as glass railing or beautiful lighting, but hidden deck fasteners can make a difference in the appearance and sophistication of your deck. Contrary to standard screws, hidden fasteners don’t leave visible holes or hardware on your deck, giving it a much more polished look.

How Much Should You Pay for Deck Accessories?

Outdoor light cost varies considerably. It can range from a few spotlights to a complete installation. Whatever your choice, lighting can make or break the charm of your space at night. The final cost depends on the complexity of the installation, the number of lights, and their quality. You can find simple solar lights for as little as $5 or invest a few hundred dollars in custom lighting with personalized LED lights or smart systems. String lights also vary widely in price, ranging from a few dollars to several hundred dollars, depending on the quality of the product.

Even though they are more expensive than regular screws, hidden deck fasteners remain affordable, with a cost per square foot ranging between $2 and $3. However, if you’re building your deck yourself, you will need additional materials for the installation.

How Much Do Steps and Railing Cost?

Steps and railing are required for safety. You’ll need resistant materials that respect local regulations, but it doesn’t mean they have to break the bank.

Railing: You’ll find several materials such as aluminum, composite, wood or glass. Deck railing cost varies greatly depending on the material and the area that needs railing. 12mm glass panels with a height of 36” typically start at $65 per linear foot. The most inexpensive deck railing choice is usually wood. Wood deck railing cost per foot begins at about $30 but varies greatly, depending on the wood type and finish you choose. For a mid-range option with a classic look, aluminum railing costs start at $50 per linear foot.

Steps: Building a deck staircase can be quite expensive. If you opt for the most basic materials, a steel stair stringer for one step costs around $20, while a pressure-treated wood step measuring 2″ x 12″ x 42″ costs about $30. This means that, at a minimum, a very basic step will cost you $50—excluding fasteners, stair railings, foundation, anchoring, staining, and installation costs if you hire a professional. The cost to build deck stairs can vary significantly depending on the materials, design, and number of steps. It can go anywhere from $100 to $500 per step. Consult a professional for an accurate cost estimate based on your specific needs.

Are Glass Railings Worth It?

Glass railings are beautiful. You’ve probably noticed them on high-rise condos, and for good reason! They are durable, safe, and easy to maintain. They will last decades without rotting, decaying, or requiring a new sealant. Of course, they need to be cleaned from time to time, like windows. They also allow light to pass through, which can be relevant depending on the design you have in mind. They can be expensive, with glass railing costs starting at $65 per linear foot. However, considering their benefits, they’re well worth it.
