Comparing decking material is a key part of the process of designing an outdoor space that works for you and your family. Invented in the 1960s, composite wood is now a very popular alternative to traditional wood, offering many advantages. Here’s an overview of composite decking in Canada, its benefits, and a few tips on buying the best material according to your needs.

What Is Composite Decking?

Composite decking is a deck made of composite wood. This material is made with wood fibres, plastic, and chemical additives. The natural fibres can consist of chips, sawdust or wood fibre pieces. The plastic can be either new or recycled. Thanks to the plastic component, the material is more resistant than regular wood, thanks to the plastic component. Some have a slim layer of PVC, also called a cap, which makes the composite extremely resistant. Some composite woods are more eco-friendly than others.

The exact composition, the properties, and the quality vary greatly from one manufacturer to another, and the same goes for the price. For example, some composite decking will fade in the sun, while others have a warranty ensuring they won’t. Some can get too warm under the sun and not be recommendable in certain settings, while other brands offer a composite that can redistribute heat well.

Why Should I Buy Composite Decking?

The benefits of composite decking are often said to overpower their disadvantages. First of all, the longevity of a composite deck is hard to beat. They usually last at least 20 to 25 years and, if well maintained, can last up to 50 years.

Since the material is manufactured, you’ll find a wide range of choices in colours, textures, and properties such as low slip, etc. This is perfect if you have a specific look in mind for your deck or want a colour that is hard to obtain with natural wood. Depending on your needs, you’ll be able to find a composite that can stand more humidity, that will never fade, or that is extra resistant to scratches.

The low maintenance aspect of a composite deck is a strong argument in favour of this material. Compared to traditional wood, composite is much easier to maintain. All you need to do is keep it clean and avoid leaving mulch or other things that can trap moisture on the deck. That’s it! No sanding, sealing or staining is needed. If you notice some damage, start by assessing its severity. Some repair kits can be used for minor problems. Otherwise, you can always ask for professional help. The good news is that most composites come with a generous warranty, meaning these fixes could cost you absolutely nothing.

How To Choose the Best Composite Decking

When buying composite, you should consider several aspects before making your choice. Price is often the first factor, with costs ranging from about $8 to $22 per square foot. This broad price range is because of the differences in quality and features between composites. The type of project will also affect the price, especially if you need to hire labour.

The brand is a key factor. Some are more reliable than others, and some offer specific features you may or may not need.

As with any project, carefully assessing your needs is essential. Do you need your deck to be resistant to scratches because you have two big dogs and children that like to play hard? Or is your deck facing south and you want it to be comfortable when walking barefoot? Do you want your deck to stay the same colour, even in areas where furniture is typically placed? These types of questions will help you choose the right material.

Several composite manufacturers offer a warranty, and some even cover labour costs for repairs. Since damage can be costly, it’s an important point to consider. If your product is under warranty, be sure to respect the terms and conditions. For example, some manufacturers only honour the warranty if the composite decking is installed with an elevation of at least 18 inches from the ground.

On a more aesthetic note, not all manufacturers offer the same composite decking colours. Some will have a few from which you can choose, while some brands have dozens of colours and tones.

Are There Any Disadvantages to Composite Decking?

Composite is a great option, but it’s not for everyone. There are some disadvantages of composite decking. Some people dislike the fact that it’s not natural and doesn’t have the same feel as wood.

It may not be the best choice for decks facing full south unless you choose a special composite such as CoolDeck™ by MoistureShield, Voyage by Deckorators™, or Azek Products (Timbertech™ Advanced PVC).

For some people, composite decking is simply too expensive. The upfront cost is indeed higher, but considering how long they last, it’s usually a wise investment. However, if you are not currently looking for a deck with long-term durability, other options may be more budget-friendly.
